McKenzie River Cabin
June 2007

Our trip to the McKenzie river cabin started out as a last minute idea more than a vacation plan. The weather in Kentucky had been typical for mid June, hot and humid. Elaine had bid for the the week off to visit our friends the Grob's out in Colorado, but when they informed us of prior arrangements during Elaine's week off, we made tentative plans to do some camping at Hocking Hill State Park in Ohio. The hot and humid weather made us re-evaluate those plans, as sleeping in a tent in that sort of heat and humidity can be a struggle. Last minute phone calls (12 hours before the flight was scheduled to depart) secured the McKenzie river cabin for the week, arranged pick up from the airport and transportation for Elaine, Sierra, Cooper and I for the three hour drive from the Portland Airport to the cabin. A quick check on the computer found that there were 20 open seats from CVG to PDX, unheard of during the post bankruptcy summer travel season. Things just lined up, so we made it happen. 2,600 miles, 10 hours, Taylor Mill Kentucky to the McKenzie river cabin, door to door. The week started off with a great omen . . . as we were driving up the McKenzie river to the cabin, a majestic bald eagle flew over head, seemingly welcoming us back "home". Our fly by the seat of our pants attitude was rewarded with a fantastic time spent with my parents on the river. Relaxing days with short hikes and plenty of down time made for an excellent vacation. As an added bonus we were able to see old friends in Portland the night before we flew back to Kentucky. It was great to see everyone! |
